So, you're a photographer and want to start publishing your work on the internet? Even though this is a fairly simple thing todo for someone like me, it may seem like a mountain to climb for others.
I'm going to share some tips on how to put up a website, how to setup a photo gallery and how to manage it all.
As with any company (every website can be seen as a company, even if it's a hobby), you need to start with the domain name. This is almost the most important part of your website, other than the actual contect. Your name tells others who you are, long before they even saw your website. This forum is a good example, perfectpictures - before you even opened the site for the first time you already knew it had something todo with pictures /photos / images.
There are various different TLD (Top Level Domains), like .co.za / .com / .net / .biz / etc. Which you choose is almost entirely up to you. Generally, .co.za domain are tied to South African companies, so this should be your first choise. .biz was generally assigned to businesses, .info to informational organizations and .com to commecrial entities. Today, .com is one of the most common domain extensions, and use by many individuals, not just companies. So, if your .co.za choice isn't available, you can still choose from many other TLD's.
Once you got your domain, it's time to start with the website.
NOTE: I'll continue with this article next week.
